Religious Observations

I studied the philosophy of Eastern and Western religions when i sat my A-levels in England and in the US. I also took a few classes on the anthropology of religion in college.

I am Jewish- I love the rituals and customs of Judaism. I love that I am encouraged to question God and the bible. As to my religious beliefs, well that’s complicated and not so black and white.

Generally speaking, I’m equal parts fascinated and disgusted by religion. Organized religion is the root of too many evils; the cause of war, intolerance and hate. None of which make sense, especially from a philosophical standpoint. Taking someone’s teachings and tailoring them to one’s twisted agenda is par the course in organized religion.

My fascination continues. From time to time, I stumble into Mosques, Temples, Churches and other houses of worship, if you will. These buildings are erected with such care and precision. So many statues and beacons of faith, tradition, love and hate.

Today, I happened upon an Orthodox Catholic church on Wilshire, during a baptism. Before Holy Water and Olive Oil were dripping from this infant’s head, the priest told him that Satan awaited him, to deviate him from his path as a child of Christ. After his baptism, he was promised security from demons, of course, contingent upon his sticking with the vows bestowed him. There was no room or margin for curiosity, which seemed daunting.

I wondered if his parents would expose him to other religions. I wondered if he would embrace or question the religion he was born into.

I chatted with a few family members. I do that, too. One of the men I spoke with said, “His eyes are dark and round like an agate. Do you remember those? The beads.”

I loved the pride and joy he exuded.

Still. I was left wondering.

Here’s a short video of the ceremony…

This is a picture of the church, which I thought was quite beautiful, though I wondered how much the building and baptism cost.

Finally, whatever variation of the bible behind the building. Likely, not his actual philosophies separate from the bible.

My faith, at present, as I said, is complicated. Still. I explore to satiate my curiosity.
